Swamiji, while we chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam is it necessary to chant the Gayathri Manthram, Santhi Manthram etc. I had an occasion to hear a discourse in which he advised that on every days twice Gayathri Manthram to be chanted. After the prayer Santhimanthram like “”Poornamatha…”, “Thamasoma Jyothrgamaya….”, “Sahanavavathu sahanow bhunakthu…”, Bhadram Karnebhi…..” etc. to be chanted. I have read in the Bhaagavatham that while praying Lord Krishna Bhagavan we should not pray anything to other gods as it is not required. Further it is also understood that we should not pray anything to God. What we are deserving will be obtained at the appropriate time.. Kindly clarify in the matter for the guidance

The concept of prayer has been totally misunderstood by Hindus by the influence of Semitic religions. While religions like Christianity teach you to pray for good things to happen in life or material and spiritual benefits, Hinduism teaches you to live life, prayerfully. There is a big difference between these. In our way, all karmas we do should be done with a bhavana of doing service to Bhagavan, taking the whole universe in totality. That is why we finish with prayers like “sarveesham….., purnamada……, Loka samastha etc.” None of these chants have any personal demands in them. It does not matter who you pray to, Krishna, Shiva, or Devi. You need to develop understanding that you are part of the Supreme Consciousness that pervades everything. That is the purpose and value of being prayerful. Hari Om.
