Dear Swamiji, I would like to ask a question out of curiosity. From Arjuna’s comment about varnasankara, the effects arising from intermixing of castes in chapter 1 of bhagavad gita, it is clear that caste system ( by birth ) was clearly existent at the time, and Arjuna also seems to be supportive of it and also lists demerits of the intermixing of castes. When I asked you earlier about caste, you mentioned that it was about taking on different mentalities depending on the the different roles that the same individual is taking on at different times in one’s lifetime. However, how to understand caste system by birth, which Arjuna talks about in Bhagavad Gita ? How is it relevant today ?

There is absolutely no mention of caste system by birth in Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavan Says “Chathur- Varnyam” not varnam meaning “that which is described as four”. That which is described as four is dependent on the Gunas and Karmas. So Varna sankaram essentially means only a mixing up of Gunas and Karmas. An inappropriate mixing of Gunas and Karma will cause downfall in the society. Hari Om.
