Namaskaram Swamiji !! My name is Harish. I saw a question about Vibhishana and want to know that is it a sin to leave your near and dear ones if you feel that their actions are adharma or injustice ? If Karna had left Duryodhana saying that his actions are not dharma then will Karna be still referred to as a great person ?

We often evaluate situations from a limited perspective. Vibhishana did not just leave his brothers. He tried his best along with Mandodari, Ravana’s wife, to make him understand he was wrong. But his pride never allowed Ravana to acknowledge his mistake or correct it. Our scriptures advise 4 ways to deal with a person. Prema- mythree- Krupa- upeksha. You first lovingly advise, then you stand by like a friend for them to correct the mistake. At the next step, you take corrective steps and show them forgiveness when they realize the mistake. If nothing works, LEAVE them. Vibhishana did exactly that.
In Karna’s case he only saw his friend Duryodhan and his obligations to help the friend. If your friend is doing a mistake (say he is selling drugs) and you support him because he is your friend, instead of trying to correct his mistake, you are equally bad. That is where the role of Dharma comes. What is the right thing or the thing that will help the Universe be a better place? That thought has to be always there in tackling or supporting someone in any situation. Hari Om.
