Pradakshina in Shiva temple is done as a 3/4 and 1/4 to denote our levels of consciousness. There are three levels of alertness directed externally – jagrat, swapna and sushupti. The fourth level is a deeper awareness which is in fact turning your understanding inwards or “thuriya”. Hence after the 3/4 we walk inward and backward to complete the cycle. It denotes an understanding of the self which is very important for a sadhak. Hari Om.
