Though the story of Ayyappan and Malikapurathu Amma sounds like a woman longing to marry a Nitya Brahmachari, the tatwam it conveys is very profound. Ayyappa, the union of Siva(Masculine energy) and Mohini( feminine principle), sits in Yoga Pattasam and is a Nyshtika Brahmachari. It only means the life energy has risen to the level of the Supreme awareness and he resides in Awareness (Brahma- Chaari). Now, Malikapurathu Amma represents Prakriti or Jeevathma. It always longs to be with the Paramatma, in marriage, or one with him. He has told her she can join him when “there are no kanni Swamis”. Here the “kanni ayyappan” represents our worldly attachments, that keep ever increasing, thus stopping us from merging with the Divine. Hari Om.
