Hanuman though was born to the Vanara Family represents a mind that achieved greatness by meditation under the Vada vruksham(sacred Banyan tree). As you rightly pointed out, he was given a garland with the leaves of the Vada vruksham as well. By giving him the vada mala, we appreciate the greatness of a meditative mind. It has no relation to food/ sani/ or uzhunnu. Hari Om.
