Dharana is the ability to sustain a thought for a long time, which of course requires concentration. It is best achieved by focussing on a mantra of your Ishtadevata and making sure your mind stay on the form of the deity while you chant. Initially your mind will wander as you do it, but with repeated practice, you will get a grip on it. Hari Om.
