My adolescent son who is 16 years old is getting addicted to smart phone. He is losing focus on his studies. He becomes impatient without the smart phone. During exams we have restricted his smart phone usage. We are finding it difficult to control his smart phone usage. Due to this there is lot of negative energy, fight, unhappiness at home. Primary worry is he is losing his focus on studies when he is entering IInd PUC the coming academic year. These days smart phones have become like drugs to adolescent children since they are exposed to the internet ocean.Kindly advise us on restricting his smart phone usage.

Any addiction is difficult to overcome and smart phones have managed to take away the “smartness” from a lot of people and just made them ” weak dependents”. It is so bad, that if we take it away from people for a few days, they even experience “withdrawal anxiety” like alcohol/ drugs. Mobile phone is a great instrument, only when used purposefully. Have you noticed who spends too much time on their phones? People who are otherwise “deprived”. If your son is on his phone too much, you need to know he is lacking something and be in his life more. I know it may sound difficult, but you have to involve with him by taking him to a movie, watch a game with him or be with him in activities he enjoys. Laugh and joke with him. Let him find it enjoyable to spend time with you. If there are other things that are beautiful in life, phone will not be the first priority. You have to help him establish better priorities by becoming a good friend. Then you can slowly make him understand what the problem of his “phone addiction” is. Hari Om.
