Swamiji, My mother in law is around 70 years old has been suffering mental depression followed by absentmindedness. She is totally lazy in household activities. Now she has undergone treatment by a Psychiatrist. Will she recover through Psychiatric treatment at this age? Or Is there any spiritual sadhana to work out for her happy life?

Old age is almost like a second childhood. Exaggerated fear, anxieties and depression are all part of it. The best thing you can do for your mother-in-law is to give her good company. Either yourself or with a Satsang group of her age. Involve her in things you do and appreciate the little things she contributes, like you would involve/appreciate a child. Make her feel you are there to care for her. Walk with her to the nearby temple, visit her relatives, and do things that she enjoys. The absent mindedness, laziness etc. is only a part of her depressive symptoms. It is important to handle our elderly with care so they don’t become depressed. Quite often it is only an expression of the isolation they feel. Hari Om.
