Swamiji, what is your opinion on the effectiveness of vows and oaths (Promises to God)?

Why would someone swear by God or promise to God? Because we see God as a power much higher than all of us and we fear if we don’t commit to a promise made to him, we will suffer. But have you really thought where this God is ? He is the Supreme power residing in us as our ability to think and act right. So all promises and vows we make are in fact a promise we make to ourselves not to sway from the path of righteousness. It is just a strong conviction we have, and firm commitment we make out of it. We should develop such a personality that we don’t need to swear or promise to God to do the right things. It should naturally be the way we behave, with values and virtues. Hari Om.
