In the Hindu tradition we do death rites as a prayer for the soul to receive a new body as soon as possible to continue its spiritual journey. However, whether such rites are done or not, each athma will progress/regress as per its karmic wealth or burden. Saying that the athma needs to be placed, which is usually done in the a family Temple or at home in a special space, is our wish to keep the soul in proximity of protective deities until a new birth is obtained.
