When atomic energy was invented it was intended to be a great power source for the world. But in the hands of the wrong rulers it became the greatest destructive weapon. Ekalavya was a highly skilled, self trained, warrior. But he being uneducated and scrupulous, in the hands of a ruler like Duryodhana would become a highly destructive member of the society then. Dronacharya by asking his thumb as a Guru Dakshina was doing it in the long term interest of the society. Though we find it difficult to accept this at our level, we should understand the Gurus those days took decisions in the general interest of the society’s well-being than focusing on individuals.
