Ayyappa is a recent historical figure and prince of Pandalam palace, who merged his powers into the idol of Dharmasastha on completion of his life’s purpose. As such, it is difficult to find mention of him in ancient scriptures though Dharmasastha has been explained in Vedas. The first text on Ayyappa may be Bhoothanathopakyanam. Ayyappa himself had given Pandalam King the set of rules for pilgrimage to HIS PLACE, where he said, he will meditate as Naishtikabrahmachari. The details of this type of celibacy is explained in Acharya Sankara’s Brahmalokaupasana. There are several ashrams around the country where the monks follow this practice. Hari Om.
