Dear Sheela,
The same question was asked by Arjuna to Krishna in Geeta and HE replied that there is no shortcut except Abhyasam.
Practice, Practice and Practice!
Do not resist thoughts…. Focus on the form of the Lord (or any meditating object) and whenever you become aware of the wandering mind, come back to the Lord!
Do Pranayam regularly and consume Sathwik food (avoid onions and garlic).
