Dear Subha,
Yama means self control by way of controlling the self.
Niyama means following certain rules and regulations.
For every progress we need self control that means not allowing the mind to go away from where our attention is needed.
Also we should engage the control of the mind where, what we really want to achieve.
As it is told when a person drives he should not use mobile, drink etc. are the Yama and have valid license putting the belt etc, and following the traffic rules are Niyama.
So both are required for one’s material as well as spiritual progress.
