1 stands for God (pure consciousness)
0 represents mind
8 represents the nature (pancha maha bhoothams, thought, memory and ego).
Now the mind can either get attracted to nature (lower energy) or to the higher spiritual energy. When you transform the lower energy to the higher energy, your concentration and mental power increases.
