Hari Om !!!There is a practice of doing Saashtanga Namaskaram and Prarthana (containing various requests)in front of temple dieties. Elders used to say that Namaskaram is intended to get rid of Ahamkaram and Prarthana (in the form of Yachana) is intended to get rid of Abhimanam. We would like to have Swamoji”s explanation in the context of Bhagavatham discourse. Continous listening of Bhagavathamrutham takes us to great heights step by step. Pranams to Swamiji

Dear Rajan Viswanathan,
In Bhagavath Geetha, Lord Krishna says that when a devotee surrenders his mind and intellect, he becomes ONE with God(Chaithanyam). Our ego lives in the intellect. When we surrender the intellect at the Lotus Feet of the Lord, it gives us tremendous strength to accept every event as God”s Prasad. Hence your attitude towards life changes altogether. To achieve this, your mind should be free from all kinds of unwanted thoughts. Through the prarthana(continuous japam) we can replace all the negative thoughts and it generates spiritual energy and attraction towards the Lord. So japam and namaskaram are so important in our Hindu culture. Japam is concerned with the purification of mind and namaskaram is surrendering of ego.
