Swamiji Bhagavath Gita says that Atma cannot be destroyed and Atma doesnot do anything Atma is just an Observer, So how or why do YamaDeva punish the Atma for doing nothing, if after death another body is formed around the Atma, its that body which is punished and not this body, is this theory of atma just a technique to attain peace? You are confused, try to learn this spiritual wisdom by observing ourself.
Look at your own body; there is birth and death happening to your body cells and the life is still there, untouched by the changes in the body.
Your mind comes in the morning when you wake up, it disappears in the sleep.
But the life in you continue to support the breathing and digestion like functions.
In the life, all the activity happens; then how can this Atma go?
So it is the mind that moves, not the life.
