Dear Aryan,
If you and me can consider ourselves as fact or real, how can we say Krishna and Rama were only characters.
Our great masters say, consider Krishna as our own conscious energy (Atma); second a Guru and finally a meditatitve divine form which helps us to develop concentration and confidence.
