Dear Ravi Nair,
Kindly excuse us for the delay in replying to your question. Please understand that there are no hard and fast rules for observing these traditions. It varies from caste to caste. Actually when some body dies we feel a vacuum and loneliness. At that time if we go to temples, we can not concentrate on the divinity because of the misery and pain that we undergo. That is why this tradition was observed. But there is no harm in reading holy texts and doing Japam etc. and lighting the lamp in the pooja room. God is not concerned with your physical impurity; HE wants only a pure mind and it’s surrender at HIS feet. And HE says that the mind which carries HIM carries no impurities.
