Pranams Swamiji, I am from Malaysia and I watch your discourses on Asianet everyday. In Malaysia most Hindus do prayers for their departed ones a day before Deepavali. Is this correct?

Nothing is right or wrong. All these are decided by the attitude. If we pray even for the dead, with a good intention that positive attitude can spread a positive energy every where.
