When you see this story as a story you may get so many similar questions.
But when you understand well, Hiranya Kashipu is your own selfish mind, which forces you to get addicted to certain life style (that is, the water or life style where we all get drowned) that can never experience the true happiness of life.
That comes only when you start living with a Yagna Bhavana(that is, the Varaham).
