Swamiji I heard about the chathurasramam and chathurvarnyam up to 12 years a newborn will be under the care of the mother. next 12 years gurukulavasam. at 24 he enters garhasthyam. after this vanaprastham and then samnyasam. My doubts….. 1. Is this same for a boy and girl and if not what is the difference 2.What is the age at vanaprastham and samnyasam starts. 3.Is the chathurvarnyam decided at the gurukulavasam ie. the sishya selects his varnam/ path according to his taste and studies under the Guru and make it practical at garhasthyam ?

Dear Ramachandranji,
Chathurasramam is not based on your age, but the maturity of your mind.
Jagad Guru Shankaracharya took Sannyasa at a very young age without going through all these phases.
Veda Vyasji, without taking Sannyas, being a Grihastha gave the treasure of Knowledge to us.
So all these shows how one’s mind is matured. Learn to live in a family with a surrendering and guiding attitude and finding time to go deep into one’s own self through meditation and finally experiencing one’s own self.
Chathurvarnyam does not depend on caste, profession or any body’s decision. It is the quality of the mind.
We seldom study Scriptures from a spiritual teacher. So we always think in terms of technical interpretations.
