Ithihas is related to history and the events happened in history like Mahabharatham.
Purana is imaginative narration imbibing great wisdom which we have to discover through deep analysis – like the story of Kaliya Mardhanam and Palazhi Madhanam.
Upanishad is the direct teaching of the Master about his conviction (through experience) about the Self to the student.
