All our rituals are, though it was started with some meaning, but in due course people started doing it blindly and with strong faith.
Most of the people may be getting some relief, that is why they continue the same.
Buts once you understand your mind is superior than all rituals, such people alone can stand away from these rituals.
As far as I am concerned the “neerajanam” is symbolising one’s own vasanas (accumulated weakness of mind or thoughts).
When one burns that in the fire of sincere devotion one is free from all kinds of weaknesses.
But with mere burning of oil nothing will happen.
