Dear Sachin, Makaravilakku is related to the star Makaram. When it apears on the Makara Rashi, the “Utharayanam” begins. To celebrate that devotees started lighting the lamp. Later on, it became Makaravilakku. Unfortunately the ignorant devotees started taking it as something mysterious. Hari Om!
